The $4.7bn (£3.7bn [Jan 2024]) contract awarded to WeBuild for the construction of an artificial lake at Trojena, in Saudi Arabia, has been cancelled, after 30% of the work has been completed.
The Italian construction company posted a statement on 25 March 2026 confirming that developer Neom had terminated the contract.
“It is hereby announced that the client Neom has exercised the termination for convenience regarding the construction in Trojena of a system of three dams designed to feed a freshwater lake, as well as the architectural structure ‘The Bow’,” the statement said.
The other megaprojects are the Line, Magna, Oxagon and Sindalah. The Line is the flagship project and was originally intended to be a 170km linear city extending from the Gulf of Aqaba in the west to the Hejaz Mountains in the east.
At the time of the WeBuild contract being announced, it was worth $4.7bn, and the exchange rate at the time put that at £3.7bn.
Construction was expected to include a dramatic structure in front of the main dam called ‘The Bow’, which would overhang a valley, with an artificial lake behind it, and would contain a hotel, residential areas and a large atrium. More info
